“I create out of necessity and by that I mean, my artistic work stems from a need I see in myself and for my community”

-Keisha Janae

“Keisha”

This piece is about Keisha’s process of reclaiming ownership of herself as land and on land. It is an exploration into her first form as a seed. She wants to understand herself as uninfluenced, unbound, unmoved, unexpected, uninhibited, and freely.

“Seat and Chase Suns”

“Inspired by the resistance shown by the people of Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico against U.S. Naval presence and bombing practices.”

We live in denial, of our interconnections that manifest in our commonality of death. I want us to put aside our differences, mobilize, and progress. I want us to fall in love with our struggle.

“I am digging. I am haunting”

This piece is about a digging process. It is an exploration of finding peace with our shadow. Explore all that is unknown to us within the cosmic world. We are made up of everything black. We are not the format of everything darkness. We are darkness.

“I call upon my sphinx to protect my riddled soul, I unclench my soul to unveil my___________,”

Languages are spells that can restrict us: What is unknown to you is natural. How dare you deconstruct the nature of my existence. I’ve begun to unmask my ritual.

This is a piece about stripping influences, labels, and social structures that have removed you from yourself. In this work, I search for authenticity. It is an endless process that makes you who you are.
